Pokémon Roulette Challenge Rules

Everything you need to set up and run a fair, fun Pokémon Roulette challenge.

What is a Pokémon Roulette Challenge?

A Pokémon Roulette Challenge is a playthrough format where every team decision is made by spinning a random wheel instead of manually choosing. First popularized on YouTube and Twitch, the challenge removes player bias and forces you to work with whatever Pokémon luck gives you. The result is often surprising, creative, and far more memorable than a standard playthrough.

There are several variants of the Pokémon Roulette challenge, from casual to hardcore. Below are the four most popular rule sets, each with a different difficulty level and focus.

Rule Sets

Standard Roulette Challenge

  1. Spin the roulette wheel to determine your starter Pokémon — no rerolls allowed.
  2. Your team may only include Pokémon obtained through roulette spins.
  3. If a spun Pokémon is unobtainable in your current game, spin again once.
  4. You may not use the same Pokémon twice in your team.
  5. Legendaries and Mythicals may be excluded for a fairer challenge.
  6. You must attempt every gym/trial with the team you have — no grinding stalls.

Hard Mode (Nuzlocke Hybrid)

  1. All Standard rules apply.
  2. If a Pokémon faints, it is permanently dead — release or box it immediately.
  3. You may only catch the first Pokémon encountered on each route.
  4. Spin the wheel to decide which caught Pokémon joins your active team.
  5. No items may be used in battle (Pokémon Center healing between battles is fine).
  6. If all six team slots are empty, the run is over.

Type Roulette Challenge

  1. Spin the Type Roulette wheel to get a random type at the start.
  2. Every Pokémon on your team must share that type (dual-types are allowed).
  3. If a required type is unavailable early in the game, spin again for a secondary allowed type.
  4. Your starter must be of the selected type or the closest available alternative.
  5. Export your mono-type team to Pokémon Showdown for online battles.

Team Builder Roulette (Showdown)

  1. Use the Team Builder Roulette to generate a random team of 6.
  2. You must use all 6 Pokémon generated — no swaps.
  3. You may customize moves, items, and EVs for each Pokémon.
  4. Export to Pokémon Showdown and play at least 5 ranked battles.
  5. Track wins and losses — try to beat 3 wins with your random team.

Tips for Running a Great Roulette Challenge

Set your rules before you spin

Agree on your rule set before starting. Changing rules mid-run undermines the spirit of the challenge.

Use generation filters

If playing a specific game (e.g., Pokémon Emerald), filter the roulette to that game's generation so results are obtainable.

Record your run

Roulette challenges make great content. Stream or record your run — unexpected results always entertain.

Export to Showdown

For competitive play, use the Team Builder Roulette and export directly to Pokémon Showdown with one click.
