Nuzlocke Roulette

The hardest Pokémon challenge: Nuzlocke rules + random roulette decisions. No safety net, no favorites.

What is a Nuzlocke Roulette?

A Nuzlocke Roulette combines the two most popular Pokémon challenge formats into one brutal run. The classic Nuzlocke rules — permadeath and first-encounter-only catches — are layered with roulette-style random team selection. The result is a run where you have no control over which Pokémon you use. Every decision is made by the wheel.

This format exploded in popularity on YouTube and Twitch because the random element creates genuinely unexpected moments. You might end up with a full team of unevolved Normal-types, or get incredibly lucky with a legendary. Either way, it makes for compelling content and a truly memorable playthrough.

The Core Nuzlocke Roulette Rules

1

Permadeath: any Pokémon that faints is permanently gone.

2

First encounter only: you may only catch the first Pokémon on each new route.

3

Your starter is determined by the roulette wheel — no manual choice.

4

When filling a team slot, spin the roulette (filtered to your gen) to pick from caught Pokémon in your box.

5

Nicknames are encouraged — it makes permadeath hurt more and feel meaningful.

6

No duplicate Pokémon or evolutionary lines allowed on the active team.

Step-by-Step Setup

1

Choose Your Game & Generation

Pick which Pokémon game you want to Nuzlocke. Use the Generation filter on the roulette wheel to match your game — Gen 1 for Red/Blue/Yellow, Gen 2 for Gold/Silver, etc.

2

Spin Your Starter

Instead of choosing your starter, use the Challenge Run mode to spin for a random one from your chosen generation. Accept whatever you get — no rerolls.

3

Apply Nuzlocke Rules to Encounters

When you reach a new route, you may only attempt to catch the first Pokémon you encounter. If you fail the catch, that slot is empty. Then spin the roulette to decide which caught Pokémon goes in your active team.

4

Permadeath — No Exceptions

If a team member faints, it's gone forever. Box it or release it. The roulette only fills empty slots when you catch a new Pokémon — you can't just spin to replace a fallen teammate.

5

Track Your Team with the Builder

Use our Team Builder to record your current Nuzlocke team. When you need to fill a slot, spin the wheel (filtered to your current gen) to pick from your box.
