Pokémon Roulette FAQ

Everything you need to know about spinning, filtering, team building, and challenge runs.

General

What is Pokémon Roulette?

Pokémon Roulette is a random Pokémon generator styled as a spinning wheel. Click Spin and you get a random Pokémon drawn from a pool of all 1,025 Pokémon across all 9 generations. You can filter the pool by generation, type, and legendary status before spinning.

How many Pokémon are in the pool?

The full pool covers all 1,025 Pokémon from Generation I (Kanto) through Generation IX (Paldea). This includes all base forms, regional variants, and legendaries. Mega evolutions and alternate forms are not included as separate entries.

Is the spin truly random?

Yes. Each spin uses JavaScript's Math.random() to select uniformly from the filtered pool. Every eligible Pokémon has an equal chance of appearing. There is no weighting, no hidden boosting of rare Pokémon, and no repeat prevention within a session (so duplicates are possible if you spin many times).

Do I need an account or login?

No account required. The roulette is fully free and works in your browser with no sign-up. Your team is stored temporarily in the page session — it resets if you refresh.

Filters

How do the generation filters work?

Selecting one or more generations restricts the spin pool to Pokémon introduced in those generations. Gen I = original 151 Kanto Pokémon; Gen II = 100 Johto Pokémon, and so on up to Gen IX. You can select multiple generations at once.

Can I filter by type?

Yes. Use the Type filter to restrict spins to a specific type. Dual-type Pokémon will appear if either of their types matches your selection. This is useful for building a mono-type team or practicing a specific type matchup.

How do I exclude Legendaries and Mythicals?

Toggle off the "Legendaries" and "Mythicals" checkboxes in the filter panel. This removes Pokémon like Mewtwo, Ho-Oh, Rayquaza, and Arceus from the pool. Recommended for challenge runs or balanced team building.

What happens if my filters leave fewer than 6 Pokémon?

For single spins, any pool size works. For "Spin Team (6)" in the Team Builder, you need at least 6 Pokémon in the filtered pool. If your filters are too restrictive, the app will warn you. Broaden your filters to fix this.

Team Builder

How do I build a team of 6?

After each spin, click "+ Add to Team" to add the Pokémon to your team. Repeat until you have 6. Alternatively, use "Spin Team (6)" on the Team Builder page to generate a full team instantly.

Can I remove a Pokémon from my team?

Yes. Click the × button on any team slot to remove that Pokémon and free up the slot for a new spin.

How do I export my team to Pokémon Showdown?

Once your team has at least one Pokémon, click "Copy Showdown". This copies the team in Pokémon Showdown's import format to your clipboard. Then open Showdown → Teambuilder → Import/Export → paste → save.

What does the Showdown export include?

The export includes the Pokémon name formatted for Showdown's import. It does not include moves, items, abilities, or EVs — you'll need to set those in the Showdown teambuilder. This is by design since the roulette is for team selection, not full set building.

Challenge Run Mode

What is Challenge Run mode?

Challenge Run is a multi-step game mode where you pick a region, spin to get a random starter, then spin for 5 more team members one by one. It's inspired by Nuzlocke-style playthroughs. Each step must be completed in order, and the Pokémon you spin are final.

Can I reroll a bad spin in Challenge Run?

No — that's the point. Challenge Run mode is designed to force you to work with whatever the wheel gives you. If you want to reroll freely, use Quick Spin mode instead.

How is Challenge Run different from Quick Spin?

Quick Spin is a free-form tool: spin as many times as you like, add whatever you want to your team. Challenge Run is a structured multi-step flow: choose your region, get a starter, fill 5 more slots in sequence. It's more of a game experience than a utility.

Technical

Where do the Pokémon sprites come from?

Sprites are served from our own CDN, sourced from the official Pokémon sprite repository. All sprites are 96×96 PNG images. We serve them locally for fast loading worldwide.

Does the roulette work on mobile?

Yes. The site is fully responsive and works on all screen sizes. The spinning wheel, filters, and team builder are all touch-friendly.

Why does the wheel show types instead of Pokémon?

The wheel segments are colored by Pokémon type for visual variety — showing 1,025 individual Pokémon on a wheel would be unreadable. The actual Pokémon is selected randomly from your filtered pool when the wheel stops, and revealed below the wheel.

Can I link directly to a specific mode or filter?

Challenge Run mode can be linked directly via /?mode=challenge. Deep-linking to specific filter states is not currently supported, but you can bookmark your preferred filter combinations after setting them.

Still have questions?

Try the roulette yourself — most answers become obvious in 30 seconds of spinning.
